My name is Vivian Bauer and I am an artist, linguist, and 2021 Thomas J. Watson Fellow. In 2022/2023, I will travel to six different countries where Portuguese is an official language; Portugal, Brasil, Timor-Leste, Cabo Verde, Angola, and Moçambique and pursue an independent project titled “Looking Beyond Museums in the Lusophone World”.

For my project, I will experience, imagine, and amplify creative spaces in the lusophone world that reach beyond Eurocentric museum models. I want to explore how these spaces do or do not deal with colonial language hierarchies, give broader access to art and education, and work to create decolonized community art spaces.

My hope is that this digital space will serve as a collaged style toolkit that will give new perspectives to the lusophone art world and inspire those to make a change in whatever space they belong to or have yet to envision.

If you are involved in any of these industries or are an artist, please contact me. I would love to talk with you!
